Sam de Silva I am privileged to be requested by the Editorial Committee of the Souvenir to be brought out on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the first issue of the "Aloysian" to contribute a message of felicitations and encouragement and to reminisce briefly over the happy days I spent at S.A.C. My reminiscences cannot cover the whole span of seventy-five years. I can only recount some of the memorable incidents that occurred during my period of studies at S.A.C.  My father was educated at Mahinda, Richmond and finally, at S.A.C. So, he thought that I too should do my final lap at S.A.C. after doing stints at a number of schools from Sariputta Vidyalaya, Matara to Piyaratne Maha Vidyalaya, Galle. From S.A.C, Galle I was to go to another Jesuit College in Calcutta - St. Xavier's - for my post-secondary school studies.  After my meanderings through several schools, I fin...

So, when we produced something out of the ordinary, we had every reason to be proud of ourselves. The 1956 season was one such success story when we emerged unbeaten among the schools with Anver captaining the side. But it was a rough road for Anver leading up to that season, so let’s ask Anver to open the batting : “The first touch of the leather ball was with my head in the first game I played for N...

Hettiarachchi /Friends of SAC Galle 1950/1960s Photos ALOYSIAN IDENTITY (Photos added for this blog post) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An article from / 1895 - 1995 , The Aloysian Souvenir Magazine ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An Article by Professor Michael Roberts ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you Intrigued by my speech inflections and my appearance a friend of mine, a teacher in English Literature, made inquiries after my familial background and ethnic identity within the melange of ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. She learnt that my Barbadian father had related very few stories of his life and times in Barbados and that my sense of West Indianness was muted. This puzzled her. Forced thus into retrospective reflection I now conclude that I lived my youthful life immersed in my everyday activities without much concern for a distinct self-identity of an ethnic sort. Along one dimension my orientation was familial. I was (and re-main) a Roberts. There were no o...
